Haffen serves as Krynshar’s personal tracker. Gifted with the ability to sense fear from great distances, he can follow its trail back to its exact source. For Haffen to perform this task with precision, Krynshar must first terrify his victims before they leave his sight, ensuring their fear becomes potent enough to stand out amidst the balanced emotions of those Krynshar isn’t pursuing. Haffen's body, far less dense than other Red Mist Creatures, is specially designed for the hunt, allowing him to slip through narrow openings and obstacles with ease and unmatched agility.
Concept Creation
Krynshar is highly intelligent due to his extensive existence, but this doesn't make him immune to making mistakes, especially when he's distracted by the enjoyment of his hunts. If he makes a mistake, he needs tools to fix it. His egocentric personality often leads him to underestimate his victims, and occasionally, some might manage to escape his line of sight. In such cases, having a way to track his victims becomes essential.
The idea of creating a demon dog for Krynshar is something I nurtured for over two years. The inspiration came from the image of iconic villains accompanied by their terrifying creatures, assisting them in decisive ways. It makes perfect sense that Krynshar's method of tracking his victims would involve using a Red Mist Creature inspired by the form of a dog for this purpose.
Demon dogs and beasts are a constant presence in both mythology and popular culture. Examples that come to my mind easily are the Hellhounds from the series Supernatural and Cerberus from Greek mythology. I could see the fierce appearance they exude—truly beasts! Their eyes, their mouths, served as excellent sources of inspiration.
Given Krynshar's power and nature, it seemed natural that he, too, would have a demon dog to aid him in his endeavors.
Dogs are known for their agility and keen sense of smell—traits that humans frequently exploit to locate objects or people. With this in mind, Haffen was conceived to possess these qualities in an enhanced form, tailored to meet Krynshar’s specific needs.
Character Creation
Krynshar's Red Mist Creatures lack noses and ears; instead, they all have horns, which vary in shape depending on the type of creature. In Haffen’s case, what would traditionally be a dog’s ears are replaced with horns, a choice that not only maintains aesthetic consistency with Krynshar's other creations but also reinforces his demonic nature.
Haffen does not have visible nostrils, as it would not make sense for him to sniff in the conventional manner since he doesn't breathe like a normal dog—he has no lungs! Instead, just like Krynshar, Haffen detects fear and other emotions in his victims through psychic abilities. This aligns Haffen's design with the internal logic of Krynshar's universe, where the functions of creatures are determined by forces beyond the physical realm.
Haffen's canine form also serves a strategic purpose: his four legs, especially the hind ones, grant him great agility, allowing him to quickly pursue Krynshar's fleeing victims. I envisioned Haffen running with a series of short leaps, using the momentum from each landing to cover large distances as he chases his target.
Additionally, the less dense composition of his body compared to the other Red Mist Creatures enhances his mobility, allowing him to move with speed and grace. Visually, this translates to Red Mist flowing from his body each time he leaps and runs, creating a powerful and evocative image.
